Vivek Agnihotri gained fame only recently after directing The Kashmir Files. Before that he used to make sleazy B-grade films like Hate Story and Zid.
These days he is just spewing venom against films and web series with some hidden agenda. He tried to sabotage Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan also a few months back but the huge success of that film made him eat his words.
Now he has targetted the latest web series Jubilee directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. Without taking its name directly, he wrote on his Twitter account that these days Bollywood retro series are all slow, lethargic, and lifeless.
But the audience and critics’ reactions are completely different. In a phase where people are impatient & intolerant towards mediocre content that they don’t even finish watching a 2-hour film on OTT, people have binge-watched the entire season of Jubilee as it is engaging, entertaining, well-performed, and very well-directed.
Despite the limited budget, production quality, set design, vintage color grading, attire, dialect, songs, and background music, everything is of superior quality. Critics are calling it a classic tribute to the golden era of Indian cinema.
Vivek Agnihotri must realize that not every content is going to be hard-hitting and pulsating. There’s something called sublime and aesthetic cinema that takes time to absorb the audience into its world. But once it does, it leaves you dazzled and Jubilee is another such work from Vikramaditya Motwane, who has made cult classics like Sacred Games, Lootera, and Udaan.
Agnihotri’s comment reeks of insecurity more than anything else.
