chinmayi-sripaada-controversy

A post of Singer Chinmayi on ‘consent’ has gone viral on social media and sparked a massive backlash from Trolls.

Chinmayi shared an incident where her husband, actor Rahul Ravindran, asked their two-year-old daughter for a hug, and when she refused, he respected her decision and didn’t force her.

A barrage of trolls are after Chinmayi’s blood saying why a father needs the consent of his two-year old daughter for hugging her and also for referring as ‘my daughter’ saying that he should be using ‘our daughter’.

Chinmayi is very vocal about the issues faced by women. But then she has been branded as ‘woke’ and a ‘feminist’ (in a negative sense). Every move of Chinmayi is scrutinised and dissected by the trolls.

But then, this incident is being taken in a wrong direction.

Everyday we have been seeing small girls abused and sexually harassed. The other day, there is a story about a father abusing his six months old daughter sexually.

It’s not like every father and daughter as such. But it is important to sensitise girls to be ready from these predators who maybe lurking in every corner and attack when they’re least expecting.

‘Consent’ is something very important lesson that should be taught to everyone. Chinmayi is trying to make a point about it.

But the problem with Social Media is that they do not see the merit in what has been said. They see it as something told by Chinmayi. When you see it that way, you naturally ignore the merit of the issue and delve into unnecessary details.

It is a tragedy that an important topic like ‘Consent’ is completely sidetracked and has a become a meat for trolls.

In countries like the U.S. or in Europe, this wouldn’t even be a discussion, as even close relatives do not forcefully cuddle or hug children. Their culture is different; they limit physical touch when showing affection for kids.

However, in India, it’s totally different, as most people think giving deep hugs to kids is the way to show love. This is not a problem as long as there is no malicious intent, but we hear so many stories about sex maniacs, so it is crucial to educate our children about this. Unfortunately, these Twitter mobs don’t understand.

They think they are taking revenge on Chinmayi by abusing her, but they have no idea how dangerously they are making fun of a sensitive issue related to children!
