This is usually an unhealthy use of social media known as interpersonal electronic surveillance (IES) or, more commonly, “Facebook stalking”. The study was published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking and psychologists across the globe believe that is exactly what is happening in most despression cases in breakups.
The researchers have evaluated associations between factors such as attachment, investment in the relationship, level of commitment, responsibility for termination of the relationship, emotional distress after the break-up etc. They found social media usage goes up with the stress after a breakup.
