Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited film Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, was announced for a grand release on January 9. Produced on a large scale, the film marks Vijay’s final project before his official political entry. However, fresh buzz from Chennai trade circles suggests the release now faces serious uncertainty.
Reports indicate that the recent Karur tragedy where a TVK-organised public meeting led to the death of over forty people has placed Vijay and his team in a difficult position. The incident sparked public outrage and political attention. While several organisers were booked, many key figures remain untraceable. These developments have disrupted Vijay’s political plans and affected the coordination of his upcoming film’s release.
With public emotions still high, Vijay’s team is said to be reconsidering its next move. Releasing Jana Nayagan amid such a sensitive time could appear insensitive, given the tragedy’s recency. As a result, discussions about postponing the film have reportedly reached top levels within the team.
If Jana Nayagan withdraws from the Sankranti race, Prabhas’ Raja Saab could gain a major edge at the box office. Without Vijay’s film competing, Raja Saab might enjoy a solo festive release across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other southern states, drawing strong footfalls and revenues.
Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi is also expected to benefit from the reshuffle. Trade experts believe Vijay’s absence would increase theatre availability and audience turnout for other Pongal releases.
Now, the main question is whether Vijay will keep the January 9 date or choose to delay the release as a mark of respect for the Karur victims. Fans, however, are hopeful to see Vijay’s final pre-political film hit theatres as promised.
