Tollywood actor JD Chakravarthy has sparked a serious debate after sharing a disturbing incident from his early days in the film industry, bringing attention to the uncomfortable realities of casting couch many actresses face.
He recalled a personal experience when he was still struggling. According to him, a close actress friend, who was well-known, had invited him and actor Suresh to a guest house for dinner. What seemed like a normal evening suddenly turned tense when an elderly and influential producer arrived unexpectedly.
Sensing something was wrong, the actress reportedly asked both of them to hide under the bed. Soon after, the producer entered and began interacting with her in a way that JD described as shocking, uncomfortable, and inappropriate. In age, he was like her grandfather. From under the bed, they could hear everything but were unable to step in.
After the producer left, what shocked JD even more was the actress’s reaction. Instead of breaking down, she reportedly laughed and said she had no choice but to tolerate such situations because of the producer’s power. She also mentioned feeling disgusted and said he smelled really bad but still went through it for film opportunities. JD Felt like crying for her situation though the actress herself joked about that pitiable and disgusting situation.
JD Chakravarthy said many women in the industry do not enter such situations willingly. Often, it is pressure, lack of opportunities, and power imbalance that force them into these circumstances. He stressed that outsiders often misunderstand this and assume consent, when in reality it may be helplessness.
His comments once again expose the glamorous image of the film industry. He made it clear that behind the scenes there are long-standing power structures that allow such behavior to continue.
Incidents like this remind people that the issue of exploitation is not just about individuals, but about a system where power is unevenly distributed. JD Chakravarthy’s statement has reopened a difficult but necessary conversation. It forces people to look beyond the glamour and ask whether enough is being done to ensure safety, dignity, and fairness for newcomers, especially women, in the film industry.
