Actress Kavya Thapar, who is currently promoting her upcoming film Nenu Ready, recently shared a hilarious incident from the early days of her Telugu film career. The actress revealed that when she arrived from Mumbai to shoot her debut Telugu film, Ee Maaya Peremito, she had no knowledge of the language. That led to an awkward but funny misunderstanding.
Kavya said she repeatedly heard people on the set say “Randi,” a word that has a completely different and offensive meaning in Hindi. Naturally, she was shocked and couldn’t understand why everyone was using it so casually.
The confusion reached its peak one day when a crew member knocked on the door of her vanity van and loudly called out, “Randi!”, asking her to come to the set for the next shot. Kavya and her mother were stunned.
Believing she had been insulted, she immediately went to producer Divya Vijay to complain about the crew member’s behavior.
The producer, however, burst into laughter before explaining the misunderstanding.
In Telugu, “Randi” is a polite and respectful way of saying “Please come,” similar to “Aao ji” in Hindi. It has absolutely no connection to the offensive Hindi word that Kavya had in mind.
Once she understood the meaning, Kavya also laughed at the situation and realized how the same word can have completely different meanings in different Indian languages.
Looking back, the actress said the incident became an important lesson while learning Telugu. It also gave her a funny memory from the sets of her very first Telugu film.
