What Is the Movie About?
Balu, a bank employee, files a complaint at a police station about his missing wife, Swapna. She had reluctantly married him under pressure from her parents, despite harbouring feelings for another man, Abaan. Meanwhile, Swapna’s parents accuse Balu of hatching a plot to get rid of their daughter. Where is Swapna?
Performances
There is only so much scope to prove range in a film that favours pace over depth, but the performances are reasonable. Varun Sandesh appears composed and mature as a caring husband, while Shweta Basu Prasad is confident in a role that needed better writing.
Analysis
Na Wife Missing, directed by Swathi Prakash Mantripragada (who also helmed Varun Sandesh’s Nayanam for ZEE5), builds a familiar marital drama around a missing-wife premise, saving its crime twist for the pre-climax. A wife going missing is an interesting starting point, but getting to that twist means sitting through a long stretch of recycled scenes.
Swapna (Shweta Basu) marries Balu (Varun Sandesh) while still in love with her lover Abaan. Her reluctance to accept the marriage, her feelings for her lover, and her eventual realisation that her husband loves her despite knowing her past form much of the film. Almost every scene in this track feels lifted from situations we have watched in several other films. There is barely any effort to bring freshness to the characters, their conversations or their changing relationships.
The writing is basic and lazy, and the treatment makes these already familiar portions feel even more lifeless. The husband’s understanding nature and the wife’s inner conflict offer scope for emotion, but the film simply moves through these situations without making you feel anything. Both leads suffer from thin characterisation, leaving their relationship without the emotional depth needed to hold the narrative together.
The missing-person angle offers some hope of shaking things up. However, the film holds back its main crime twist until the closing stretch, while the portions leading up to it keep repeating familiar relationship beats. With so little engaging material along the way, the twist has too much work to do by the time it arrives.
The reveal itself is decent, but its execution is far too convenient. The way Varun reaches Shweta and rescues her involves little struggle or convincing buildup. Even at this crucial stage, the writing takes the easiest route to a resolution. The twist may work for a section of forgiving OTT viewers, but the climax lacks the basic effort and impact needed to make it worth your time.
The most pleasant part is seeing Varun Sandesh and Shweta Basu Prasad together again after Kotha Bangaru Lokam (2008 film). Their reunion brings back memories of their earlier successful pairing and gives the film some initial goodwill. That also makes the wasted opportunity more disappointing. A pair with that nostalgic appeal deserved a script with some basic care.
Overall, Na Wife Missing stretches a familiar relationship drama around one late crime twist. Beyond the lead pair’s reunion, there is little here that feels thoughtfully written or made with passion. The lethargic treatment and overly convenient ending make it difficult to recommend, even as casual OTT fare.
Performances by Other Actors
Praveen makes his presence felt in an important role. Mohit Pedada as Abaan, isn’t given much to work with. The remaining supporting actors, including those playing family members, barely register.
Music and Other Departments?
Sai Karthick’s background score is functional and does what’s expected, though the occasional song doesn’t leave an impact. Cinematography by N S Sathish Kumar is sharp and neat, using live locations and enclosed spaces effectively. Some editing choices hamper the narrative flow. Dialogues by Bhargav Ram are situational but not impactful.
Highlights?
Lead pair’s reunion
Final twist (for less demanding OTT viewers)
Drawbacks?
Almost every scene feels recycled
Thinly written lead characters
Basic, lazy writing full of conveniences
Zero emotional depth
Overly convenient climax, despite the twist
Did I Enjoy It?
No. Apart from seeing the lead pair together again, nothing in the entire film felt well-crafted or made with passion.
Will You Recommend It?
No, unless you need something on OTT that won’t distract you from your chores.
