Malayalam cinema is always renowned for making novel films that have brilliant writing and relatively pristine technical values. But the film industry is comparatively smaller in terms of box office returns as rarely were Mallu films going big at the box office.
But come 2024, things have changed completely for Malayalam cinema and it has quickly become one of the best-performing film industries not just down South but in all of India.
Since the start of 2024, Malayalam cinema rolled out Premalu, Manjummel Boys, and Aadujeevitham, all of them being Rs 100 crore grossers at the box office. In fact, Manjummel Boys made over Rs 200 crores and is the first Malayalam film to do so.
Earlier, it was a rarity for a Malayalam film to even come close to Rs 100 crore let alone breaching this mark. But since the start of 2024, Mallu cinema rolled out three Rs 100 crore grossers with one of them even touching Rs 200 crore. The consistency of refined filmmaking is being met with deserved box office reception.
The opening up of new avenues overseas and also contributions from the Tamil market have majorly helped Malayalam cinema. In the case of Premalu, it touched nearly Rs 15 crore gross, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam dubbed film in the Telugu states.
With this, Mallu cinema might have stepped out of the small film industry zone. But this can be consolidated if the consistency of Rs 100 crore grossers is maintained over an elongated period.
