Vishwak Sen’s latest release, directed by debutant director Vidyadhar Kagita, received appreciation from a section of audiences, reflected in its first weekend collections in the U.S.
‘Gaami’ became the first half-a-million grosser for Vishwak Sen ($580,579), but the film slowed down significantly after the first weekend.
What is surprising is that ‘Premalu,’ the Telugu dubbed version, which started with very low collections, slowly picked up by the second weekend in the U.S. The Telugu version dominated ‘Gaami’s collections in the entire second week run.
‘Premalu’ Telugu has collected $258,493, an impressive figure given it is a Malayalam film with all unknown faces. Yet, the Telugu dubbed version making more than $250K is significant.
Rajamouli’s son Karthikeya bought the Telugu dub rights and did his best to push the film to the audiences. Word of mouth among the youth segment also helped generate good numbers. Prathyangira Cinemas distributed Premalu Telugu version in the U.S.
It rarely happens that a straight Telugu film, especially one with a different attempt like ‘Gaami,’ is beaten by a Malayalam dubbed film like ‘Premalu’.
