Rashmika Dragged Again: Kannada Cinema Targeting Her?

Rashmika Mandanna Kannada roots debate

Kannada cinema is increasingly proving that films made on modest budgets can find audiences beyond language barriers. The success of Premada Oorali is the latest example.

However, a remark by veteran Kannada actor Rangayana Raghu at a promotional event has become a talking point for a different reason. In a viral video, he asks the film’s heroines, Tapaswini and Ramika Shivu, to make a promise before entering other film industries.

Raghu tells them that whether they work in Telugu, Tamil or Bollywood films, they should always remember their Kannada roots. He even adds a humorous condition, asking them not to change the address on their Aadhaar cards.

The comment was made in a light-hearted manner, but it has sparked discussion online. Some viewers see it as a deeper message to actresses who move from Kannada cinema to bigger film industries.

Rashmika Mandanna’s name has inevitably entered the conversation. She began her career in Kannada cinema before becoming a prominent pan-India actress through Telugu and Hindi films. Her marriage to Telugu star Vijay Deverakonda has also strengthened her connection to the Telugu film industry.

Over the years, Rashmika has faced heavy backlash from sections of Karnataka for allegedly distancing herself from her Kannada roots. Against this background, some social-media users have interpreted Raghu’s remark as an indirect dig at her.

Kannada cinema deserves recognition when its talent reaches national audiences. However, expecting actors to constantly talk about Karnataka to prove their loyalty is unfair. Rashmika working in other industries or not mentioning Karnataka all the time does not automatically mean she has forgotten her roots. Artists should be free to expand their careers without constantly having to prove where they come from.
