Flops, Delays, Empty Theatres: Can Small Films Save TFI?

Telugu film posters summer releases

Tollywood entered the summer season with strong expectations on Ustaad Bhagat Singh, Peddi, and a steady flow of releases to revive box office momentum. Ustaad Bhagat Singh flopped and Peddi got postponed. The industry expected these two months to generate consistent revenue, but the results so far have fallen way short of those expectations.

Last week saw the release of Biker, which managed average public talk but ended up with a flop box office verdict. This week, Dacoit performed relatively better, but whether it is enough to ensure producers reach breakeven is still not clear. However, the dubbed film LIK turned out to be an outright disaster and emerged as a shocker for 100-crore hero Pradeep Ranganathan.

Now, the focus shifts to the upcoming week, which lacks any big star driven films. Instead, some small and medium budget films are gearing up for release. Among them are Thimmarajupalli TV, Papam Prathap, and Bad Boy Karthik starring Naga Shaurya.

Bad Boy Karthik faces an uphill battle. It should have ideally been the big comeback movie for Naga Shaurya, who has been reeling under back-to-back flops since 2018. The film has suffered long delays, and the lack of promotions has significantly reduced its visibility. Most of the audience does not even know such a film exists. Additionally, Naga Shaurya’s recent track record of flops has further affected its potential. The film needs a big miracle to survive.

On the other hand, Papam Prathap carries some advantage due to backing from ETV Win, whose brand recognition could help pull some initial crowds. Thimmarajupalli TV, backed by actor producer Kiran Abbavaram, is being aggressively promoted, but we have to see if these promotions turn into theatrical footfalls.

Alongside these, the Malayalam dubbed film Pallichattambi, starring Tovino Thomas and Kayadu Lohar, is also set for release.

At this point, the Telugu box office urgently needs a solid hit. While none of these films carry many expectations, small films can sometimes emerge as surprise winners.

Even if not a blockbuster, a film that manages decent openings and sustains momentum for a few days could provide some relief for the ailing theatres that are currently struggling for footfalls.
