Telugu cinema’s Tier-1 heroes are going all out on pan-India projects, and the scale of their upcoming films shows how much the industry has changed.
Mahesh Babu is working on Varanasi, Allu Arjun has Raaka and AA23 in his lineup, while NTR is busy with Dragon. Prabhas, meanwhile, is in a different league altogether, working on three major projects simultaneously: Fauzi, Spirit and Kalki 2.
Amid this trend, an interesting update about another upcoming pan-India film is doing the rounds. According to the buzz, the hero has reportedly been offered the Telugu version theatrical rights in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka as part of his remuneration.
It is being described as a favourable deal for both the hero and the producers. Instead of taking a huge upfront remuneration, the actor gets a direct stake in the film’s theatrical performance across key markets. If the film performs strongly, the hero stands to benefit significantly, while the producers can reduce their immediate financial burden.
The identity of the project has not been officially revealed. There was speculation that the film could be Prabhas’ Fauzi. However, inside sources have clarified that it is not Fauzi.
Interestingly, the recent blockbuster Irumudi is another example of this kind of arrangement. Ravi Teja reportedly took the Nizam theatrical rights as part of his remuneration, and the film’s phenomenal success has now turned the deal into a jackpot for him.
With star salaries becoming a major part of film budgets, such profit-linked or rights-based deals could become more common in the future. They allow producers to manage costs while giving stars a bigger financial incentive to ensure their films succeed at the box office.
Instead of simply taking a massive cheque upfront, stars can now earn more if their films become big hits. They also have a bigger reason to ensure the film works because their payment now depends on its box-office performance.
