It was in 2004, Rajamouli‘s sports drama with Nithin ‘Sye’ came to the theatres and turned into a blockbuster for the young hero. Later, we’ve seen very few films made with a sports backdrop. Rugby was comparatively an unknown game for us but, kindled interest among the audiences.
The recent release ‘A1 Express’ had the backdrop of hockey and again, hockey is not a familiar one to many when compared to cricket and Kabaddi. This movie disappointed us big time. However, Nani’s cricket backdrop saga ‘Jersey’ that won two National Awards this year was a successful emotional drama woven around cricket.
Now, the makers of ‘Jersey’, Sitara Entertainments are said to be planning a movie with a basketball backdrop, again an unknown terrain like Rajamouli chose the Rugby game for ‘Sye’. Adivisesh’s ‘Kshnam’ director Ravikanth Perepu will be wielding the microphone as the director.
Tollywood seems to be experimenting with choosing games that are relatively not so popular among the masses and also introducing them through the most popular medium, cinema. So even after 16 years, Tollywood is continuing testing ground with Rajamouli’s formula of selecting not-known games and sports.
