Will Small Films Save TFI, or Is Peddi the Only Hope?

Tollywood theatres await Peddi box office boost

The Tollywood summer box office is currently going through one of its dullest phases in recent years. Several big-budget films that were expected to dominate the season got postponed due to production delays and scheduling issues, leaving theatres heavily dependent on smaller releases that have failed to generate any kind of buzz among audiences.

This Friday, three Telugu films are arriving in theatres: Godari Gattupaina starring Sumanth Prabhas, Sathi Leelavathi featuring Lavanya Tripathi, and Ravi Babu’s Razor. Despite belonging to different genres, none of these films have managed to create noticeable pre-release excitement. Not so interesting promotions and the absence of major star power have resulted in extremely weak advance bookings.

The current situation in theatres is becoming increasingly worrying for exhibitors. In several B and C centers, single-screen theatre owners are reportedly considering shutting operations temporarily until the release of Peddi in June, hoping that a tier-1 star hero film might revive audience footfalls. Theatre owners say the collections are so poor that even electricity bills and staff salaries are becoming difficult to manage.

The online booking numbers for this week’s releases paint a very depressing picture. Godari Gattupaina, Razor, and Sathi Leelavathi are seeing extremely poor advance sales across major theatres and multiplexes. Many shows have zero bookings, while others have only a handful of tickets sold. Some multiplexes have opened just one show due to weak demand.

If any one of them manages to click with audiences through strong content and positive word of mouth, it could at least bring some movement back into theatres.

With rising ticket prices, increasing OTT consumption, and audiences becoming far more selective, poor theatrical experiences and weak content could gradually push more viewers permanently toward streaming platforms.

For now, all eyes are on whether one of these small releases can emerge as a surprise winner and give the struggling summer box office the boost it desperately needs.
