1 Yr Per Project: Tollywood Needs Big Change?

Tollywood work pace debate

Telugu cinema has built a strong reputation for delivering commercial hits that perform well across languages. Films like Baahubali, Pushpa, and RRR have proven this success in recent years.

However, a fresh debate has started after comments made by Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas. His statement has raised questions about the working style followed in Tollywood.

Tovino Thomas said that working on a Telugu film can take nearly a year. He suggested that this long schedule keeps him away, as he could complete multiple Malayalam films in the same time.

He made this comment while responding to a question about his exit from the NTR-Neel film. His remark quickly caught attention on social media platforms.

Many Telugu cinema followers have now started discussing the issue. Some believe that Telugu actors should increase their working pace and take inspiration from other industries.

In Malayalam cinema, actors often work on several films in a short period. Tovino Thomas himself has acted in nearly 50 films between 2012 and 2024.

Senior Malayalam stars like Mohanlal and Mammootty also release three or four films in a year. This consistent output is rarely seen in Telugu cinema.

In contrast, Telugu films are usually made on a much larger scale. The production timelines are longer due to high budgets and detailed planning.

The revenue generated by a single Telugu blockbuster like Baahubali or Pushpa can match the yearly earnings of the Malayalam film industry. This highlights the difference in scale.

Even then, some experts feel that better planning can help Telugu stars release at least two films per year. This could improve consistency without affecting quality.

At the same time, every film industry follows its own working style. Tollywood’s approach is shaped by its scale, audience expectations, and production methods.
