Streaming saw a boom during the pandemic when everyone was shut down in their homes and had ample time to binge-watch programs, movies, and other entertainment stuff. Not surprisingly, the current figures show that there is an ongoing race between three top streaming giants to capture the time of their viewers.
As of now, Disney leads the race closely followed by Netflix and Amazon Prime. Surely, audiences now want to move out of their homes and go watch a film, rather than stay home and watch a series unless and until it’s gripping or quirky and different.
Disney paid subscribers in Q4 of FY22 have been announced and it currently has 235.7 million paid subscribers. However, that number is the addition of Disney+ Hotstar at 164 million, Hulu at 47 million, and ESPN+ at 24 million. However, they fall short of Wall Street’s prediction of 350 million subscribers.
If one were to compare statistics, Netflix took 12 years and 9 months, to reach 160 million paid subscribers. On the other hand, Disney+ took 2 years and 10 months to reach the same mark. Disney has also successfully gained internationally within three years of its inception and hopes to narrow direct-to-customer operating losses to achieve profitability in 2024 if the economic predictions remain constant.
