Varanasi OTT on Netflix? VP Monika Shergill Responds to M9

Varanasi OTT rights update

While director S.S. Rajamouli and Superstar Mahesh Babu’s highly anticipated pan-world film Varanasi is reportedly facing delays in locking its digital partner due to an exceptionally high price tag being quoted, a major breakthrough might be on the horizon.

When we at M9 News directly questioned Netflix India’s Vice President of Content, Monika Shergill, about the probability of Varanasi joining their massive 2027 content slate, she handled the high-stakes query with a telling smile.

Rather than giving a definitive answer, Shergill chose to keep her cards close to her chest. She playfully declined to make an official announcement on the spot, noting that the platform prefers to “leave some surprises” for its audience.

However, when we reminded her of the massive global popularity RRR achieved on their platform, she firmly added that the biggest creators and the best stories always find their home on Netflix.

The industry buzz surrounding Varanasi suggests that despite the high quoting stalling negotiations elsewhere, a monumental digital deal is brewing behind the scenes.

Shergill’s confident response hints that Netflix is competing aggressively to secure the digital rights for this action epic, which co-stars Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran and is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
