Varanasi, Dragon, Spirit: One Big Common Headache?

Prakash Raj in major Telugu films

Prakash Raj has always been one of the most respected actors in Indian cinema. Whether it is a villain, father, politician, cop, or character role, he has repeatedly proven why he is considered among the finest performers of his generation.

At the same time, he is also one of the most controversial public figures in the film industry.

Over the years, Prakash Raj’s political comments, social media posts, and outspoken views have earned him both supporters and haters. While some admire him for speaking his mind, many others strongly disagree with his positions and often accuse him of targeting certain ideologies and beliefs.

Despite the constant controversies, filmmakers continue to cast him in some of the biggest upcoming Telugu projects.

According to industry reports, Prakash Raj is set to be part of several high-profile films, including SS Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s Varanasi, Prashanth Neel and NTR’s Dragon, Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit starring Prabhas, Dil Raju’s Yellamma, and Sujeeth’s OG 2 with Pawan Kalyan.

That has triggered a fresh debate on social media.

A section of users has started demanding that filmmakers stop casting Prakash Raj in such big projects. Some posts specifically mention films like Varanasi, Spirit, and Dragon, arguing that his presence could generate unnecessary negativity around otherwise highly anticipated films.

The question, however, is whether this social media outrage actually translates into a meaningful impact at the box office.

He might be facing huge negativity online, but on ground, there might not be much impact. Most moviegoers ultimately separate the actor from his personal beliefs and judge the performance on screen rather than the opinions expressed off screen.

However, it also cannot be denied that the landscape has changed considerably in recent years.

Today, social media conversations can influence public perception, shape narratives, and create negative trends around films long before release. Even if such campaigns do not affect box-office numbers in a big way, they can still contribute to unwanted negativity around a film.

For directors like SS Rajamouli, Prashanth Neel, and Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the issue is unlikely to matter much. Their films are driven primarily by the director’s credibility, star power, and storytelling rather than discussions about the supporting cast.

For now, social media may be loud. But history suggests that filmmakers continue casting Prakash Raj for a simple reason: regardless of the controversies, very few actors can match his screen presence, versatility, and acting ability.
