Speculation has started spreading about the release date of Varanasi, the pan world film being made by Mahesh Babu and director SS Rajamouli. Some people claim the film will release in the last week of March or first week of April 2027 to coincide with Ugadi and Sri Rama Navami. However, the truth is that Rajamouli himself has not finalized or announced any release date yet. In fact, even he does not have complete clarity at this stage.
The main reason is the scale and complexity of the project. Even if the shooting finishes quickly, the post-production work will take a very long time. The team is using advanced technologies such as IMAX and Dolby Cinema, which require extensive visual effects, sound design, and technical refinement. Because of this, the final output cannot be rushed or estimated casually.
That is why Rajamouli avoided mentioning any release date during the title launch event held in Hyderabad. Some people dropped indirect hints, but no one officially confirmed anything. As of now, a significant portion of the shoot is still pending, and several crucial schedules are yet to begin. Rajamouli is fully focused on completing these sequences, while song shoots are being planned separately.
Although 2026 has already begun, managing shooting, post-production, and global technical work within a limited timeline looks extremely challenging. Rajamouli is known for never compromising on quality, even under pressure.
However, one major headache for Rajamouli will be managing competition. The year 2027 is expected to be crowded with big ticket releases. Projects like Allu Arjun’s film with Atlee are likely to arrive around the same time. If Jr. NTR and Prashanth Neel’s Dragon gets delayed, it could also end up releasing in 2027. Added to that, Prabhas’ Spirit may enter the race as well.
Avoiding clashes with such massive films is crucial for Varanasi to achieve record breaking worldwide collections. At the same time, each of these projects will be chasing the same ideal conditions, a solo release, a clean calendar, and a long theatrical run. With so many tentpole films competing for limited prime windows, locking a perfect release date for Rajamouli’s Varanasi will be anything but easy.
Because of all these factors, announcing a date too early could create problems for both this film and others. Until Rajamouli gains full control over timelines, the release date of Varanasi in 2027 will remain uncertain.
