In general, Malayalam movies receive a lot of appreciation for their storytelling, presenting simple, emotional, and warm stories on the big screen. These low-budget movies often become blockbusters within the Malayalam industry and are also appreciated by viewers from other languages, such as Telugu, through OTT platforms.
During the COVID period, Malayalam films gained more exposure among fans of other languages as many people started watching non-Telugu films. Now, there is anticipation among a section of Telugu movie fans for Malayalam releases as well.
However, it’s strange that an industry known for its simple and rooted stories has completely neglected TV series. Finally, Hotstar has released the first-ever Malayalam original series titled ‘Kerala Crime Files‘ this week.
The overall feedback is unanimously ‘decent,’ if not great. The show succeeds due to its writing more than the actual case. For fans of slow-paced and simple investigative thrillers who don’t have high expectations, Kerala Crime Files is a perfect series to watch.
Considering the nature of Malayalam storytelling, the TV series industry should explore more and bring forth engaging shows in the near future, given the increased exposure.
