War 2 finally released in theatres today, and the reviews have started coming in. Among the most talked about responses is from well-known critic Taran Adarsh, who has surprised many by giving the action thriller just 1.5 stars. This is notable because in 2019 he had given the first War a 4-star rating, and his ratings for other YRF Spy Universe films have generally been positive.
His latest review has created debate on social media, with some users doubting that he genuinely disliked the film. Others have even claimed that Taran does not know how to review movies, pointing to his past low ratings for films that are now considered cult classics.
The list of such films includes Devdas, Swades, Chak De! India, Rang De Basanti, Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Gadar Ek Prem Katha, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Dhamaal, Dhol, Bhagam Bhag, and others. Despite becoming highly regarded over time, many of these received between 1 and 3 stars from him.
While there is no way to prove if those earlier ratings were right or wrong, in the case of War 2 his criticism is justified. The movie falls short of the high expectations built by its announcement, teaser, and trailer, and its content does not merit more than 2 stars.
Ignoring box office numbers, YRF Spy Universe productions are expected to deliver strong entertainment, and War 2 fails to meet that goal. Not just Taran Adarsh but most critics agree the film does not achieve the desired impact. It remains to be seen if War 2 will still manage to become a blockbuster or settle for a modest run.
