Lokesh Kanagaraj

Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik–NTR’s War 2 are both set to release on August 14, aiming to cash in on the Independence Day weekend. But instead of maximizing their potential, the clash could hurt both films’ box office collections.

While War 2 is a big-budget Bollywood action film expected to do well in North India and the Telugu states due to NTR’s massive fanbase, Coolie brings its own strengths.

Rajinikanth already delivered a 600-crore blockbuster with Jailer, and this time, Lokesh Kanagaraj has masterfully added even more star power with Aamir Khan for the Hindi belt, along with Nagarjuna and Upendra for Telugu and Kannada audiences.

Lokesh Kanagaraj, who himself has fans across India, has ensured that Coolie is clearly designed to appeal across languages. He is confident that Coolie will be big in Hindi mostly because of the Aamir Khan factor, which can boost collections in the Hindi belt and potentially turn out to be a major masterstroke.

But Aamir Khan is facing a lull in his career. He hasn’t had success in the last 9 years. He is not a star who can command big openings just based on his name. In the post-pandemic era, he has somewhat become irrelevant in terms of stardom when compared to SRK or Ranbir.

So Lokesh depending on Aamir might not be a great idea. However, a lot will depend on how much Aamir is shown in the promos and how he is presented. If it is something crazy and out of the box, then Aamir might turn out to be a trump card for Coolie.

Both films are aiming for the 1000-crore mark and have strong pan-India appeal, but this clash may reduce their chances of reaching that milestone.

If Lokesh’s multi-industry strategy works, Coolie could make a serious dent in War 2’s performance—and vice versa.
