War 2 vs Coolie: Worse Than SRK vs Prabhas Fiasco?

War 2 vs Coolie

The highly anticipated box office clash between Coolie and War 2 is all set to unfold on August 14, 2025, and trade circles are already bracing for impact.

Rajinikanth’s Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and Hrithik Roshan–NTR’s War 2, from the YRF Spy Universe, were both poised to be 1000-crore grossers in their own right.

However, with both films now releasing on the same Independence Day weekend, their potential could be reduced now to 500-600 crores.

The situation reminds of the Dunki–Salaar fiasco, where both films cannibalized each other’s collections. Neither Dunki could become another 500 crores worldwide grosser for SRK nor Prabhas got a clean hit despite working with a big director like Prashanth Neel.

Instead of maximizing their reach like Pushpa 2 and Chhaava, which smartly avoided a clash and turned into massive hits, Coolie and War 2 are now on killing each other’s potential.

Industry experts predict that Coolie will dominate in Tamil Nadu and most of South India, riding high on Lokesh Kanagaraj’s directorial pull more than just Rajinikanth’s mass appeal.

On the other hand, War 2 is banking on NTR’s fanbase in South and Hrithik’s North Indian dominance. However, Coolie could still eat into the Hindi belt thanks to Lokesh’s growing reach post-Vikram and Leo.

While some fans dismiss the clash by saying Hindi films don’t work in Tamil Nadu and vice versa, history shows otherwise. Good content transcends language barriers, and if Coolie is marketed well, it could dent War 2 in multiplex-dominated metros, both in South and North.

WAR 2 could have easily touched the 1000-cr mark as a solo release and Coolie had a chance to become the first 1000-crore film from Tamil. If the clash happens, then even with good word of mouth, their potential is reduced by 25-30% at least.
