Yash’s Toxic has managed to trigger strong reactions with its trailer. The film has received praise for its scale, making, and visuals, but the presentation of some characters and the over-the-top emotions have also attracted backlash. Many have loved it, while many others have completely rejected it.
The theatrical business is reportedly looking strong across various markets. However, the situation appears to be very different when it comes to the non-theatrical business.
According to the latest industry buzz, the OTT and satellite rights of Toxic are yet to be sold. The makers are reportedly looking for a massive non-theatrical deal, with Yash and KVN Productions said to be targeting around Rs. 250 crores from the digital and satellite rights.
However, OTT platforms are reportedly nowhere close to that valuation.
According to trade buzz, streaming platforms are currently willing to offer only around Rs. 100-125 crores. That puts Toxic in a tricky position.
The film is being mounted on a massive scale, and recovering a substantial portion of the budget through OTT and satellite deals would significantly reduce the theatrical pressure. But if the makers are unable to secure the valuation they are targeting, they will have to depend much more heavily on the theatrical run.
The trailer has certainly created curiosity, particularly because of its grand visuals and technical presentation. The makers will now be hoping that the strong reactions translate into greater interest from OTT platforms before release, which would put them in a better position.
However, if Toxic releases without locking a digital deal, there would be two scenarios. If it gets an outstanding response from the audience and at the box office, OTT platforms could potentially increase their offer. But if the film fails to impress, they may not even be willing to offer the Rs. 100-125 crores currently being discussed.
That makes the theatrical verdict extremely important.
For now, Toxic may look massive on screen, but the OTT cheque is apparently not looking equally massive.
