What Is the Show About?
A year after Reena’s car accident, RK Hospitals is revamped with a new set of doctors and management, headed by Manasa. As Ravi returns to the hospital premises, he is surprised to witness the sea change at the workplace, with no familiar faces. Meanwhile, Arjun returns to college to heal old wounds, Vijay paves the way for Reena’s recovery, and Radhi remains stuck in the past, unable to move on.
Performances
Deepa Balu continues to play the angsty yet caring young woman well, while Charukesh appears to be in a shell, probably due to his character’s emotional state. Anumol K Manoharan, at least in the first four episodes, is only asked to be a weepy mother and a disappointed doctor, and does not get to do anything drastically different from the earlier seasons. Karthik Kumar and Sabareesh maintain a lively screen presence. Ashwathy Agnihothri passes muster as Manasa.
Analysis
The success of any TV show boils down to basic emotions and drama revolving around relatable characters in a familiar setting. Heart Beat, Jio Hotstar’s hit Tamil OTT show, constantly gives you a been-there-seen-that vibe but has been an audience favourite for a couple of seasons now. One of the main reasons is a no-brainer. It offers something for everyone. While there are abundant characters, the storytelling remains simple, avoiding needless complications.
Heart Beat Season 3 offers a brief recap of Reena’s paternal roots, her accident and subsequent recovery in Vijay’s presence. RK Hospitals is grappling with sweeping changes in the management, thanks to Manasa. Seniors like Saranya and Radhi remain unhappy with the unilateral decisions, though. Arjun’s life undergoes a drastic makeover as he returns to college, the place where his career kick-started.
There are new faces at RK Hospitals who warrant your attention. Aradhana, a woman with a mysterious past, wins over her colleagues when she takes charge of a critical situation as a goon threatens the staff. A newly appointed doctor, Rajesh, upsets many with his draconian rules and autocratic behaviour. The place begins to feel like a business enterprise.
Life is slightly more colourful for the likes of Arjun, Reena and Vijay. Arjun is consistently pursued by a female classmate at college who craves his attention. Reena is visibly attracted to her colleague Kathir. She moots a proposal to get Vijay married again. Radhi’s father pleads with Reena and Vijay to pay heed to his daughter’s woes.
Shifting from a couple of blossoming romances to family drama and tension around the power hierarchies within a hospital, Heart Beat Season 3 starts with assurance. The foundation for the conflicts in the story- Manasa’s headstrong ways, the staff’s growing discontent, and the tension between Reena and Radhi- is laid neatly.
The new season continues seamlessly from where the previous one ends and brings enough changes into the mix to avoid feeling repetitive. The predominant themes of the show, nevertheless, remain the same, revolving around the hospital leadership, its functioning, and the drama in the personal lives of its key characters.
While returning viewers may appreciate the season more, given their familiarity with the relationship dynamics, newcomers would not miss much even if they have not watched the earlier episodes. The well-edited recaps feel like God-sent saviours in that regard, capturing the essence of an entire season in a minute or two.
Watching Heart Beat Season 3 is an easy way to kill time. It is nothing out of the ordinary, does not claim to be a magnum opus, and speaks in a language that is accessible to a discerning viewer without beating around the bush. Do not overthink this guilty pleasure.
Music and Other Departments?
There is nothing groundbreaking about the music in the initial episodes. At least, it does not come in the way of the narrative flow or affect the proceedings much. The team uses a mix of bright, peppy colours for the costumes and production design, making for pleasant viewing. While the writing is functional at best, the makers keep the winning formula going. At best, it feels like a quick snack rather than a wholesome meal.
