The local body elections in Telangana are getting delayed due to multiple reasons. The gram panchayat elections, which were scheduled to be held earlier this year, were postponed due to the caste census. It is being heard that the polls will be held in January 2025. However, there is no official update about the same.
Meanwhile, it is now being heard that the GHMC elections, which are scheduled to be held towards the end of 2025 or early 2026, will also be postponed by one year.
According to sources, the Congress government is planning to push the Baldia elections due to the expansion of the city, dissolving the surrounding gram panchayats and nagar panchayats into the Greater region.
The government is currently planning to expand the city to the ORR region. Recently, a gazette has been released declaring the dissolution of 51-gram panchayats surrounding the ORR region. In January 2025, the nearby municipalities and nagar panchayats will be dissolved into GHMC.
Meanwhile, the tenure of the current GHMC representatives will end by the end of 2025. After that, the government will decide on the population census, reallocation of divisions, and how many corporations the city should be divided into.
Currently, GHMC spans over 625 square km. After dissolving the nearby villages and towns, the city’s area will expand to over 2500 square km. Circles and zones will be decided after the city’s expansion.
Also, it has to be seen how many regions the city will be divided into after expansion. We have to see whether it will be divided into North, South, East, and West Corporations like Delhi or Hyderabad and Secunderabad Corporations.
After the tenure of the GHMC representatives ends next year, the government will appoint special commissioners who will look after the corporation for another year. If everything goes as planned, the GHMC elections for the expanded city will be held in 2027.
