It appears that the BJP, facing a decline in popularity leading up to the elections in Telangana, is looking to appeal to the Scheduled Castes (SCs) as a last resort. There is a possibility that Prime Minister Modi may make an important decision concerning SC sub-categorization as the assembly elections in Telangana approach. Analysts believe that Modi may announce the long-awaited SC sub-category.
Madiga castes make up 60 percent of the SC population in Telangana and are a crucial vote bank in 20-25 constituencies. Political analysts suggest that the Madigas have the potential to determine the fate of MLA candidates, especially in the 4-5 segments where they are the second-largest community.
The Madigas have expressed dissatisfaction that their benefits are being affected despite reservation and are demanding SC sub-categorization. The Madiga Reservation Struggle Samithi (MRPS) has been consistently advocating for sub-categorization for three decades. The BJP appears to be supportive of this classification, and if it is implemented, it could present a strong counter to the BRS’s Dalit Bandhu scheme. The BJP is keen on gaining the support of the MRPS.
In October, MRPS founder Mandakrishna Madiga presented a petition to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, seeking SC sub-categorization. He mentioned that the Central government had responded positively to his request.
Furthermore, there are reports that Prime Minister Modi will visit Telangana on November 11 for an election visit, and he may announce SC sub-categorization in the presence of Manda Krishna Maadiga on that day. This decision could have significant implications for the political landscape in Telangana.
