Donald Trump Avenue in Hyderabad, Downright Silly

Donald Trump Avenue naming dispute Hyderabad

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced plans to rename key roads in Hyderabad after global corporations and well-known figures. The aim is to honour their role in shaping Hyderabad into a strong IT and innovation hub, while improving the city’s global identity.

He first spoke about this idea at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum conclave in New Delhi in November 2025. The proposal shifts away from political naming and moves towards corporate titles for better international recall. The suggested names include Google Street, Microsoft Road, Wipro Junction, Ratan Tata Road and Donald Trump Avenue.

Among these, Donald Trump Avenue sparked criticism. The road planned beside the US Consulate General in Hyderabad is described as the world’s first for a sitting or former US President. However, approval from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the US Embassy is still pending.

Street names based on global companies appear meaningful, but Donald Trump Avenue feels excessive. Except for being the US President, the name carries no real value. Many others contributed to global tech growth and supported Hyderabad, while Donald Trump’s policies restricted IT expansion and jobs outside the US.

Tensions remain between India and the US after Trump-era tariffs. India now leans towards Russia, and this proposal surfaced during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India, sending a sharp message to the US. The timing and the idea both seem misplaced.

If the only qualifying factor is being US President, you wonder whether the name changes once a new President takes office in January 2029. The Government of India will likely reject the proposal or leave it pending without a direct reply.
