Tamil Nadu politics is not a film set where popularity guarantees a blockbuster. An actor may enjoy enormous fan support, command public attention and attract thousands to an event. But winning people’s trust as a political leader is an entirely different challenge. Dhanush needs to understand this before turning his fan base into a political launchpad.
South India has seen this story before. Vijayakanth entered Tamil Nadu politics with a strong following and built the DMDK into a serious political force. Yet his party struggled to retain that influence over time. In Andhra Pradesh, Chiranjeevi launched the Praja Rajyam Party amid huge expectations. Despite his star power, he could not turn that enthusiasm into lasting political success and eventually merged his party with the Congress.
These examples carry a clear lesson. Crowds can create excitement, but they cannot guarantee political survival. Fans may celebrate an actor’s every move, but voters expect answers on jobs, education, healthcare, agriculture and governance. They want leadership that continues long after the campaign banners come down.
Now, Dhanush’s fan club is being reorganised as a welfare movement. Meetings and public activities have fuelled speculation about his political ambitions. But what exactly is the political message? What does he stand for? What change does he want to bring to Tamil Nadu? So far, the publicity appears to be running ahead of any clearly established political agenda.
Tamil Nadu has a politically aware electorate with decades of experience watching film stars enter politics. People may admire Dhanush as an actor, but that does not mean they are ready to trust him with the state’s future. He cannot expect a political opening simply because another celebrity has attracted attention.
Vijay’s rise to the Chief Minister’s chair is no guarantee that Dhanush can repeat the same journey. If Vijay fails to meet public expectations, even a small mistake could become a political weapon against the next actor hoping to enter politics. Dhanush should remember that Rajinikanth, despite years of political speculation, ultimately chose not to take the electoral plunge. In Tamil Nadu, fame may create an opportunity, but one wrong political calculation can turn public excitement into public ridicule. Dhanush needs to think carefully before taking that step.
