With more than 1.6 million cases, chlamydia was the most prevalent, an increase of 4%. The number of STIs fell rapidly during the COVID pandemic as people were mostly indoors.

From 2020 to 2021, the overall reported rate of gonorrhea increased by 4.6%. Syphilis cases surged 32% in one year. The reports also suggest that STIs continue to disproportionately affect bisexual and gay men and younger people.

Additionally, an unusual number of cases were reported among Black and American Indian-Alaska Native people who are more likely to face social conditions that make it tougher to stay healthy.
