Telangana is planning a massive new cricket stadium in Bharat Future City near Hyderabad. The project is being pushed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and will cover around 100 acres.
The proposed stadium is expected to have more than 1.32 lakh seats. If completed, it would be bigger than Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, currently the world’s largest cricket stadium.
The foundation stone is expected to be laid in December 2026. The Telangana government will provide the land, while the BCCI will reportedly take care of the construction and maintenance.
The stadium is planned as a multipurpose venue. It will be inspired by Lord’s in England and some major Australian stadiums. Apart from cricket, it could host other sports, concerts, and major events.
The location is also expected to have good road connectivity, planned metro access, and easy access to the airport. The existing Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal is seen as limited when it comes to hosting very big international events.
However, the plan has received mixed reactions.
Supporters believe the new stadium can improve Hyderabad’s image as a global sports city. It also fits into the larger Sports City plan for Bharat Future City.
But many feel the project is unnecessary. Hyderabad already has a good cricket stadium at Uppal, which hosts IPL matches and international games. Many are questioning why the city needs another massive cricket stadium.
Some social media users asked why more money is being spent on cricket when India still lacks proper facilities in sports such as football, hockey, and athletics. Others suggested that Hyderabad should instead build a world-class football stadium.
Sports expert Joy Bhattacharjya strongly slammed the plan and called it a “criminal waste of money”. He said the existing stadium is enough for Hyderabad’s cricket needs and suggested building smaller facilities for different sports, concerts, and other activities. He also suggested developing cricket grounds across Telangana’s 33 districts.
Hockey Olympian Viren Rasquinha also pointed out that many other sports still lack basic grounds while cricket continues to get bigger facilities.
The debate is now about more than just one stadium. It raises a bigger question: Should India continue spending heavily on cricket, or should more focus go towards developing other sports as well?
The project is still in the early planning stage.
