Last night, Royal Challengers Bengaluru faced Kolkata Knight Riders in a heated IPL clash. The game ended overwhelmingly in favor of KKR after RCB was literally blown away as the 183 target set by the side was blown away by KKR in 17 overs.
This immediately brought Virat Kohli under the pump as he scored 83 runs from 59 balls in the first innings. At the end of the first innings, RCB set a target of 182 and this was largely due to the stagnant innings of Kohli.
Even fans started to fume at Kohli for the slow innings which meant that the team couldn’t accelerate further and post a big score that was needed on the pitch. There are videos of RCB fans saying RCB can’t win the cup as long as Kohli is there as he plays these slow innings that affect the team. A few are even commenting that Kohli is not even fit for the Indian T20 team if he keeps playing like this.
But people are thinking too far ahead on this topic, we must say. Kohli’s innings progressed like this mostly due to the fact that wickets kept tumbling around him with the RCB batsmen coming to the crease and getting out. Another reason could be that the pitch played slow in the first innings due to tackiness and go better in the second innings, as revealed by KKR player Venkatesh Iyer himself.
Digging too deep to criticize Kohli on this one inning is perhaps not the right thing to do. It could be that the Indian team fans and RCB followers are reacting too much to a singular innings.
