Andhra Pradesh politics has always been direct in nature, with the political tussle between Jagan Mohan Reddy and Chandrababu Naidu remaining a major talking point.
Now, Andhra Pradesh is gearing up for the Assembly session beginning on August 17. Against this backdrop, the debate over Jagan’s participation in the Assembly has once again come into focus.
On one hand, the ruling NDA government is challenging Jagan to attend the Assembly and fulfil his responsibility as the Pulivendula MLA. However, Jagan has maintained his demand for Opposition Leader status and the related protocol before attending the House.
Jagan has been demanding recognition as the Leader of the Opposition. The issue has remained a point of contention between the YSR Congress Party and the ruling coalition.
Amid the recent challenges from NDA representatives, Ambati Rambabu came out with his own argument. Speaking to the media, he said, “We have made it very clear that Jagan will not attend the Assembly if he is not given the opposition status. Dammunte Jagan ki opposition leader status ivvandi, appudu andaram vastam.”
However, the constitutional and procedural position remains a major hurdle for Jagan’s demand. In the 175-member Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, a party needs at least 18 MLAs to qualify for recognition as the Leader of the Opposition. YSRCP currently has 11 MLAs.
The Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker had already rejected Jagan’s demand for Leader of the Opposition status in March 2025, citing the lack of the required numerical strength. The issue has continued to remain a political flashpoint between the YSRCP and the ruling NDA.
Despite this, the YSRCP continues to insist on its demand for Jagan to be recognised as the Leader of the Opposition. The standoff over his Assembly participation and Opposition status is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
