Free 2BHK Flats to the poor is one of the flagship projects of Telangana government. The state government vowed to construct One Lakh houses for poor in Hyderabad as well. But the project is a non-starter as builders are not coming forward, saying that the unit cost of Rs 7 lakh offered by government was financially non-viable.

The State Municipal Minister, KTR is mooting a real estate idea to come out of this mess. The government has offered a proposal before the builders, allowing them to sell 50 per cent of the flats and give remaining 50 per cent to the poor. The builders will construct separate blocks for the poor and buyers.
They are also allowed to lay separate roads and even increase the built-up area of the flats to meet the needs of their buyers. The flats for other buyers can be sold at market prices. The government is expecting that this proposal would break the deadlock this month and speed up construction of 2BHK houses.
