Narendra Modi’s government had instructed his cabinet colleagues to use Metro and other public transport as much as possible to avoid unnecessary expenses to the government and also save the environment from vehicular pollution. Modi even instructed the staff of the ministers and other employees to do the same and set an example for the people. Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu carried Modi’s message to all his colleagues.
During the last UPA government’s tenure, the then oil and gas minister Veerappa Moily had launched a fuel conservation campaign to curb the oil imports. He then asked all ministries and state chief ministers to observe a Bus Day every week which will lower the oil imports and thereby strengthen the rupee. But the instructions were paid a deaf ear. We will have to see if Modi will have any effect!
