Praja Shanti Party chief KA Paul recently filed a petition at the Supreme Court, seeking to bring back the ballot paper voting process during elections in India.
The court heard the petition today and dismissed it. The bench featuring Justices Vikram Nath and P B Varale said, “What happens is, when you win the election, EVMs are not tampered with. When you lose the election, EVMs are tampered with.”

Apart from the ballot paper request, Paul also sought orders to make the Election Commission ban candidates for at least five years if they are caught giving money, liquor, or other gifts to voters during elections.
Looking at his PIL, the bench said, “You have interesting PILs. How do you get these brilliant ideas?”. It also questioned Paul why is he getting into politics when his field of work is completely different.

When Paul argued that foreign countries adopted ballot paper voting and requested the court to implement the same in India, the court asked if he doesn’t want his country to be different from the rest of the world. It asked Paul if bringing back ballot paper voting would really stop corruption.
Interestingly, it was YCP and its chief Jagan Mohan Reddy who complained about EVM tampering, but in the end, it was KA Paul who filed the petition. YCP only made baseless accusations after losing the elections and didn’t dare to file any formal complaint.
