Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has delivered a striking reality check regarding selective public accountability. Following the horrific industrial disaster at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Kalyan rushed to the site to console grieving families and the injured.
While addressing the pressing issues of worker safety and compensation, he highlighted a frustrating double standard: how active leaders trying to repair systemic problems are treated as emotional punching bags, while those responsible for the decay are never questioned.
During his address, Kalyan directly targeted the lack of action from the prior YSRCP regime. He reminded the public that when the previous government was actively working to sell off the plant, he stood as a shield alongside the labor unions to fight the privatization.
He recalled how he had previously urged union leaders to rally with him in Delhi to fight for captive mines, yet many remained silent at that critical juncture. He pointed out that the current crisis is a direct result of legacy issues and structural decay ignored during the last five years of YSRCP governance, preceded by a decade of underinvestment under the Congress administration.
Kalyan emphasized that those who step up to take responsibility are often bombarded with aggressive questions, while the politicians who ruled with an iron fist for five years are let off the hook entirely.
He made it clear that his administration has no intention of fleeing from these heavy inherited burdens. Instead, the focus remains on ensuring strict safety audits, delivering immediate financial justice to the families of the deceased, and uncovering a permanent, practical path forward for the steel plant rather than playing political blame games.
