Pawan Kalyan’s latest speech about Tamil Nadu politics sounded funny on the surface, but there was clearly some pain hidden behind the smile. While talking about comparisons with Vijay, he said Vijay had a much smoother political journey. It is not the first time he spoke about Vijay.
“వాళ్లు కటౌట్లు పెట్టుకున్నారు… గెలిచేశారు… సీఎంలు అయిపోయారు,” he joked. But the statement also reflected the struggles he personally faced in Andhra Pradesh politics.
The reality is, Vijay’s political entry and Pawan Kalyan’s journey are completely different. Vijay did not carry the baggage of a failed political experiment like Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party(PRP).
Vijay also did not have constant pressure from caste-based leaders and community expectations the way Pawan faced from figures like Mudragada and Jogayya over the years.
Timing also helped Vijay. In Tamilnadu elections DMK’s biggest political fight is more against BJP and Modi at the national level, rather than focusing entirely on Vijay. That gives him breathing space to slowly build his political image without facing nonstop attacks from day one.
Another major difference is social media. Prashant Kishor and his team showed how digital campaigns, influencer networks, and Instagram-driven politics could shape public opinion. Vijay’s team appears to have understood this shift very well and is aggressively using modern political branding. This strategy works best only once, when a big movie star enters politics and perception is built strongly through digital media. Even for Vijay, these digital campaigns may not make the same level of impact next time.
But Vijay’s journey was not always this bold. Back in 2011, he supported Jayalalithaa politically. Even when he reportedly did not get even an appointment with her later, and even when one of his films faced trouble during her government, Vijay stayed silent. He adjusted to the system then, just like many others in Tamil cinema politics.
That is why Pawan Kalyan perhaps does not need to feel pain while looking at Tamil Nadu politics. His path was more complicated, and filled with direct and indirect (PRP) political battles from the beginning.
In the end, politics is not only about winning fast. Sometimes, “తగ్గి నెగ్గడం” itself becomes the bigger story.
