
Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, the Chairman of Margadarshi Group of Companies is the founder, editor-in-chief and publisher of the Telugu daily Eenadu. He owns businesses like Margadarshi Chitfund, Priya Foods, Kalanjali etc.
The world’s largest film studio Ramoji Film City is owned by the Ramoji group founded by Ramoji Rao. In 2016, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest award.

Family Background: Ramoji Rao was born on November 16, 1936 in Pedaparupudi of Krishna district. He is born into a farmer’s family. His father is Venkata Subbarao and Mother is Venkatasubbamma. Ramoji Rao’s ancestors belonged to Perishepalli village in Palmeru mandal. His grandfather Ramayya migrated from Perishepalli to Pedaparupudi with his family. Ramoji Rao was born thirteen days after his grandfather’s death. His parents named him Ramayya in his memory. He has two sisters. The elder one’s name is Rajyalakshmi and the younger one’s name is Ranganayakamma.

Ramoji Rao for some reason did not like his name Ramayya and created the name “Ramoji Rao” on his own when he entered primary school and named himself as such. That name continued throughout his life. In 1947, Ramoji Rao joined Purapal Konnata School in Gudiwada in 8th standard. In 1957, he completed his sixth form there and studied Intermedia and B.Sc in Gudivada College. On 19 August 1961, Ramoji Rao married Ramadevi, the second daughter of Tatineni Venkata Subbaiah and Vanidevi of Penamaluru. Ramoji Rao’s wife’s younger brother-in-law Tatineni Venkata Krishnarao worked together as a director in Margadarshi Chit Funds, while his co-brother Musunuru Apparao Eenadu worked together as the former MD of Dolphins Hotels.

On August 10, 1974, ‘Eenadu’ was launched on the shores of Visakhapatnam. Within four years of its launch, it has become a favorite of readers. He did a yeoman service to Telugu people and Telugu language with Eenadu and ETV. Eenadu will be completing the 50 years of its existence in August this year.
