Why BRS Fears CBI Inquiry On Kaleshwaram?

Telangana Assembly debate on Kaleshwaram CBI probe

The Telangana Assembly witnessed a lengthy discussion on the PC Ghose Commission’s Report regarding the Kaleshwaram Project. The debate grew intense, with the Congress pressing hard to corner the BRS. Harish Rao defended the party in the absence of KCR.

Akbaruddin Owaisi backed the BRS during the session, possibly influenced by HYDRAA’s notice to Fatima Owaisi College. He targeted the government in his speech.

In a surprising move, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced a CBI inquiry into the project towards the end of the debate. This left the BRS shocked and questioning the decision. Leaders argued that handing the case to the CBI was unfair, especially when Rahul Gandhi had earlier accused the agency of bias.

KTR reacted sharply on social media, calling out Rahul Gandhi. He said that the same CBI, once called the “Opposition Elimination Cell” by Rahul, was now brought in by the Congress government in Telangana. He added that the BRS would fight the case both legally and politically, with faith in the judiciary and the people.

Meanwhile, KCR and Harish Rao filed an urgent petition to halt the CBI investigation. The court, however, refused to stall proceedings and deferred the matter until the High Court hearing scheduled for tomorrow.

For the BRS, the CBI probe is a major worry. They fear the BJP might use it to weaken the Opposition in Telangana and strengthen its own presence.

Earlier, after the piers of the Medigadda Barrage collapsed, the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) inspected the site within hours. Their report blamed flaws in planning, design, and maintenance.

KTR criticised the NDSA for acting swiftly in Telangana while ignoring repeated breaches of the Polavaram cofferdam in Andhra Pradesh. He called the NDSA’s report on Kaleshwaram “politically driven fiction,” suggesting it was part of the BJP’s agenda against the BRS and former Chief Minister KCR.

KTR fears the CBI’s involvement could create more challenges for the party. He held a teleconference with district leaders, urging them to organise Dharnas, Rasta Rokos, and Bike Rallies against the government.

He also claimed that the move was a strategy to destroy the Kaleshwaram Project and divert Telangana’s waters to Andhra Pradesh.
