One of the six major promises made by the Congress party during the assembly elections in Telangana was free bus rides for women across the state under the Mahalakshmi scheme. This promise helped Congress in getting a majority of women’s votes in Telangana.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy started this scheme within 48 hours after taking charge on December 9, 2023. Since then, lakhs of women have been regularly utilising this free bus scheme for travel.

According to the reports, around 30 lakh women are using the free bus scheme every day across Telangana.
As of now, women in the state utilised 68.60 crore free bus rides in TGSRTC, worth Rs. 2350 crore, over the past seven months.

That means women in Telangana cumulatively saved up to Rs. 2350 crore under this Mahalakshmi scheme. The government of Telangana reimbursed Rs. 1740 crore to TGSRTC so far.
Meanwhile, government supporters opined that Congress is helping TGSRTC to become a billion-dollar organisation with this Mahalakshmi scheme.

The “free ride for women” scheme is available in other states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as well. It would start in Andhra Pradesh on August 15.
