Andhra Pradesh politics has long seen caste and community identities become part of political discourse. In the latest development, former YSR Congress Party leader Vijaya Sai Reddy has made fresh remarks targeting Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and his political identity.
Vijaya Sai Reddy said that, according to his view, the Chief Minister’s post in Andhra Pradesh has largely been held by leaders associated with two communities. He referred to Kamma and Christian communities and urged people to consider leaders from other communities for the Chief Minister’s post.
His remarks also directly targeted Jagan’s religious identity. Jagan has publicly identified as a Christian, while his family background and religious identity have been a subject of political debate for years.
Vijaya Sai Reddy has also recently raised allegations about religious conversions within the YSR Congress Party. In a September 16 post, he shared an old video involving former YSRCP MLA Dwarampudi Chandrasekhar Reddy and questioned whether leaders had converted to Christianity to secure MLA tickets or ministerial positions. These are allegations made by Sai Reddy and are not independently established facts.
The YSRCP has rejected Sai Reddy’s recent allegations. Party state coordinator Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy described his remarks as politically motivated and said the claims about religious conversions were unfounded.
The latest comments have therefore brought the discussion around caste, religion and political representation back into focus in Andhra Pradesh. Sai Reddy’s remarks are likely to keep the debate around Jagan and the YSR family’s political identity active.
