The last time YS Jagan took to the streets, he completed the historic Praja Sankalpa Yatra. It remains one of the most notable political campaigns in the recent history of Andhra Pradesh.
The execution of the campaign was effective as Jagan was aggressive and informative at the same time. This approach helped him connect with the masses. However, that connection appeared to weaken after he became Chief Minister.
The impact was reflected in the 2024 Assembly election result. Now Jagan has reportedly communicated that he will begin the next phase of his Pada Yatra in July next year.
The walkathon is expected to begin around the time of the YSR birth anniversary in July. Preparations could reportedly begin accordingly.
Jagan has always been effective at attracting large crowds. However, his bigger challenge has been converting that public support into actual electoral results and deliverables.
At a time when Jagan is already facing criticism over his capital proposal in the name of MAVIGUN, convincing the people of Andhra Pradesh about a return to power in 2029 will be extremely challenging.
More importantly, the current Chandrababu government has maintained a strong focus on governance and social infrastructure development. This means there is no obvious political vacuum for Jagan to exploit.
The situation was different in 2019. The alliance had split at the time and there was internal drift within the TDP, BJP and JSP. That is not the case now as the alliance remains consolidated in power.
The upcoming walkathon will therefore be far from an easy electoral battle for Jagan. Much will depend on how much support he receives from the general public during the campaign.
