Alcoholism is one of the major problems faced by Rural people. Poor people spend their hard earned money for liquor neglecting their family. There are instances where some men resort to selling the Mangala Sutras of their wives for liquor. YSR Congress Party Supremo YS Jagan had announced that he will be increasing the prices of liquor by several folds so that common man do not have access to them.

But this promise by Jagan is backfiring. Social Activists say “This promise is very immature. You have to think on the lines of prohibiting alcohol for curbing alcoholism. Increasing the prices will increase the woes of women. Addicted men resort even to crimes to buy alcohol”. Income from alcohol sales form the major income of any state. It was during the tenure of late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, a complete prohibition was introduced and it took heavy toll on the state exchequer.
