Performances

Gopi Chand plays a walk-in-the-party role that he pulls off with ease. The role offers nothing new or challenging; it’s a simple one he has done before, not just once but more than once. He looks good and fit, which helps elevate the fight scenes.

Kavya Thapar has a regular, cliché role that doesn’t demand much beyond looking glamorous, and she fits the bill. However, when it comes to simple facial expressions, she falls flat.

Viswam is directed by Srinu Vaitla, known for his outright comedy entertainers blended with action. In his comeback film, Viswam, he surprisingly chose a core plot that feels as old as it can get.

To earn goodwill or prove that he is back with a bang, he had only one option: he needed to refresh everything with refreshing comedy that feels new, but that is where he fails.

In the entire first half, barring Prudhvi’s track, all other humor written for the other artists feels outdated. Additionally, the hero and heroine’s Italy track is lengthy and unimpressive. There isn’t a single scene that stands out in this entire lengthy foreign episode. Both the situations and the conversations between the hero and heroine are outright boring.

A song, Prudhvi’s comedy (though not full-length), and the interval fight are the only positives of the first half.

The second half begins with the kid who was shot in the middle of her chest alive, showing how director Srinu Vaitla does not care about the convincing factor and just believes that everything sells in cinema.

The main issue is with the weak villain; neither the villain (Jisshu Sengupta) nor his setup belongs anywhere near the buildup the director is trying to present.

When it comes to the lengthy train comedy episode, only Vennela Kishore comes as a savior. His act might irritate some, but he definitely brings some laughs. The rest of the comedy gang and their jokes are something we would call ‘rotta.’

When the hero’s flashback opens, it goes on forever, making you wish for a remote to fast forward through it.

The ending is completely outdated. A notorious and powerful terrorist delivering dialogue after dialogue with Gopichand feels funny and highlights where Srinu Vaitla is still stuck.

Overall, Viswam has a couple of funny threads and a song or two that appeal to the masses, but the rest feels highly outdated. You need to have a certain level of acceptance to enjoy the movie as a whole because of its stale story and cringe-worthy comedy.

Viswam has a truckload of comedy artists like Naresh, Sunil, Pragathi, VTV Ganesh, Vennela Kishore, Srikanth Iyengar, Rahul Ramakrishna, Pruthvi, Raghu Karumanchi, Chammak Chandra, and more.

But among this comedy group, only Prudhvi delivers effective humor, followed by Vennela Kishore, though his entire track may not work for everyone; he manages to makes us laugh in a few parts. The rest suffer from either outdated or cringeworthy writing.

Jisshu Sengupta plays a notorious terrorist, but his role is very poorly written. At no point do we feel that he is a threat; it is such weak work.

Senior actor Naresh usually steals the show given this length, but he is just ordinary due to the writing. The same goes for Sunil; he isn’t funny enough to make an impact.

The music and background score by Chaitan Bharadwaj are decent; a couple of songs he delivered appeal to the mass audience, and the background score is also decent. The camerawork by K.V. Guhan is quite decent; otherwise, this film would have felt more dated due to the writing. Amar Reddy Kudumula’s editing needed more sharpness.

The production values by People Media Factory and Chitralayam Studios are decent, and the film visually looks good.

Final Report:

The comedy is okay here and there, especially Prudvi’s track and Vennela Kishore’s parts, but overall, it feels like watching an outdated film with a highly routine and exaggerated storyline. A couple of songs and fights are good, but the never-ending, 90s-style climax tests one’s patience.

The core story revolves around a clichéd terrorist setup, and the dialogues feel extremely outdated. For Gopichand, the role is an easy, effortless fit.

First Half Report:

The first half of Viswam is fun only when Prudvi is on screen; however, the other comedy tracks, including the hero-heroine romance, feel dated. The interval fight is good.
