Lately, the prevalence of deepfake videos has raised serious concerns in the online sphere, particularly affecting numerous celebrities. In response, the Indian government is taking decisive actions to curb these technological threats.
According to Rajeev Chandrashekar, Minister of Electronics & Technology, the department recently conducted an extensive meeting on November 24 involving all social media platforms. During this meeting, the government reiterated that as per existing regulations, platforms bear the responsibility to uphold internet safety and prevent the spread of deepfakes.
Rajeev emphasized their readiness to enforce crucial measures, including the potential revocation of safe harbour protections and the pursuit of legal recourse against platforms failing to adequately combat the proliferation of deepfakes.
