The Canadian government has withdrawn 41 diplomats from India, affecting visa and consular services in Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. This reduction may lead to a backlog of 17,500 application decisions from India.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller anticipates delays in immigration and visa application processing due to the reduced staff. Only 21 Canadian diplomats remain in India. With 27 Immigration Department staff members among the withdrawn diplomats, the operations are currently being handled with only 5 persons.

The withdrawal was prompted by India’s removal of Canadian representatives’ diplomatic immunity, causing a reduced diplomatic presence in India.
