ChatGPT Leads, Gemini Follows: India’s AI App Race

India’s AI adoption is accelerating rapidly, but user behaviour shows a clear trend. Instead of relying on a single platform, Indian users are actively exploring multiple AI apps to meet different needs.

A recent Business Standard report shared on X highlights monthly active users of AI chat apps in India. ChatGPT leads with 145 million users.

Gemini follows closely with 105 million users. Perplexity records 20 million monthly active users, indicating steady interest in search-focused AI tools.

Meanwhile, newer entrants remain far behind. Grok and DeepSeek each remain under the 5 million user mark, showing how tough the Indian market can be for latecomers.

ChatGPT’s dominance is not surprising. As an early mover, it has become part of daily workflows for students, creators, and professionals across sectors.

Gemini’s strong second position reflects Google’s reach in India. Android integration and expanding local language support appear to be key factors behind its growth.

Perplexity’s user base shows there is demand for AI-driven search experiences. However, Grok and DeepSeek face challenges like low awareness, limited integrations, and intense competition.

Reactions on X reveal mixed opinions. Some users urge India to build strong local AI platforms, while others stress the need for better data privacy safeguards.

India’s affordable data and widespread smartphone usage create ideal conditions for AI growth. Still, user preferences may shift quickly with better Hindi and regional language support or revised pricing.

This is not a zero-sum race. As AI tools evolve, greater fragmentation is expected, giving users more choice while pushing platforms to innovate specifically for India.
