In a significant landmark which makes the nation stand proud, Hyderabad and Bengaluru airports in 2023 pulled off impressive on-time performance (OTP) statistics as they secured the second and third positions globally in the ‘global airports’ category.

According to aviation analytics firm Cirium’s recent rankings, released on Tuesday, these airports demonstrated a remarkable commitment to punctuality.

A flight is considered on-time if it arrives or departs within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. Cirium relies on ‘Gate Arrival’ as a metric to measure OTP, a crucial indicator of reliability. This metric plays a pivotal role in ranking airlines based on OTP arrivals and airports based on OTP departures.

Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport achieved an outstanding OTP of 84.42%, securing the second position globally. Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport closely followed, claiming the third spot with an impressive OTP of 84.08%.

The consistent punctuality portrayed by these airports is a testament to their operational efficiency and commitment to passenger satisfaction.

It’s noteworthy that the global leader in OTP was Minneapolis’ St Paul International Airport in the US, boasting an impressive OTP of 84.44%.

Cirium’s methodology considers the ‘Gate Arrival’ time, acknowledging the potential discrepancy between runway and gate arrival times. This discrepancy can range from five to 30 minutes, influenced by factors like the taxi track network and ground congestion at the airport.

While both Hyderabad and Bengaluru airports demonstrated remarkable punctuality, it’s interesting to note that Hyderabad’s OTP experienced a slight dip in 2023, decreasing by 1 percentage point compared to 2022.

Japanese airports, traditionally known for their punctuality, faced challenges in maintaining their OTP in 2023, according to a Cirium spokesperson. This shift in rankings highlights the dynamic nature of global aviation trends.

With this Hyderabad and Bengaluru airports have etched their names among the world’s most punctual, providing a seamless and reliable travel experience for passengers, underscoring the continuous pursuit of excellence within India’s aviation industry.
