Viral Video Exposes Toxic Social Media on IIT Girls

IIT Roorkee student Jalebi Baby dance

A video of an IIT Roorkee student dancing to Tesher’s Jalebi Baby has gone viral, sparking heated debate online. While many praised her for her confidence and dance moves, others criticised the institution for allowing such performances.

The clip was first shared on X with the caption, “If this is IIT, then we are done.” The comment received backlash as several users defended the student, pointing out the toxic mindset of judging someone for simply enjoying a college fest.

Supporters argued that the girl had already cleared one of India’s toughest entrance exams and will likely secure a stable career. They asked why people could not accept her enjoying herself. Many added that a beautiful dance cannot be labelled obscene.

The discussion also highlighted how some right-wing social media handles try to dictate women’s lives, from their clothes to their behaviour. Users pointed out the hypocrisy of celebrating such dance numbers in films while shaming a student for doing the same on campus.

One user noted that wearing shorts and a shirt is no different from men wearing half pants and a vest at home. Still, a section of internet users condemned the performance as vulgar, proving how regressive attitudes continue to shape public opinion.

Though the video is not recent, the reactions around it have reignited debate about women’s freedom in Indian campuses. The incident shows how a simple act of dancing can expose the persistent double standards in society.
